Naturopathy

Naturopathy is a philosophy that promotes the abilities of the body to heal and take care of itself. It is both a science and an art. The term “Naturopathy” was coined in the 19th century and means “nature cures”.

Naturopathy encompasses a range of therapies that have been used for hundreds, and sometimes thousands, of years to stimulate the bodies innate healing capacities and restore the body back into a state of Homeostasis and balance. These therapies include herbal medicine, homeopathy, Body work such as Bowen Therapy and massage, Iridology, whole-foods diet, clean air and water (nature care), nutritional supplementation, counselling and hypnotherapy.

In my practice I use many of the above Naturopathic therapies to treat a range of conditions. These include auto-immune conditions like Hashimotos, rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, inflammatory bowel disease; stress-related conditions like Anxiety and Depression; hormonal imbalances such as adrenal fatigue; and a range of women’s heal issues such as fertility, menstrual health, menopause, pregnancy and birth support.

There has been a large growth in research into Naturopathic therapies over the last 15 years, which supports the work Naturopaths have been doing for hundreds (if not thousands) of years. As such, many of the therapies used in Naturopathic medicine are now evidence-based and as such Naturopathy can be used in conjunction with Western medicine and other models of health care.

There are six founding principles that underpin the practice of Naturopathy. These determine the treatment and maintenance plans for long-term optimal health that I use in my practice. They are:

  1. The healing power of nature (Vis Medicatrix Naturae)

  2. First, do no harm

  3. Find and treat the cause, whenever possible, not only the symptoms

  4. Treat the whole person

  5. Education

  6. Prevention

With these principles in mind my treatments involve addressing the underlying drivers of biochemical and physiological imbalances in the mind and body therefore outcomes can at times take longer then treating the symptom with a drug that is a short term fix. Long term resolution of symptoms takes longer as the body is supported to heal on a true and level.
